Chapter 8 Summary

Gummy Larson sends an emissary, Hubert Coffee, to Adam to try to persuade him to give Gummy the construction contract. Anne is in Adam's apartment at the time of the visit. Adam strikes Coffee and throws him out, then sits down to write his resignation. Anne calls Jack and meets him to tell him what happened. Jack's solution is to have Willie swear out a warrant for the arrest of Coffee. Jack goes to Adam and convinces him that swearing out a warrant will fix everything. He tears up Adam's resignation.

Jack hesitates,, because he realizes that Anne will have to testify, and everyone will then know the tawdry affair with Willie. She insists that she doesn't care, but Jack cannot allow it. Then he asks her why she did it. She says Willie.....
