Chapter 7 Summary

After Anne confirms her involvement with Willie, without telling anyone, Jack gets in his car and drives cross-country to California, not stopping until he reaches Long Beach. As he drives, he recounts his life story. He recalls the years when he, Adam, and Anne were inseparable; then he remembers when it was just he and Anne. They had been falling in love for most of their lives, but one summer they acknowledged it. She was 17; he was 20 and a student at State. They pledged themselves that summer to be married. They had not been intimate but had been building up to it and found themselves alone in Jack's home one evening, not expecting his parents to come back until late. Just as she was undressed and he partially so, they unexpectedly.....
