Chapter 6 Summary

Tom, Willie and Lucy's son, has wrapped his expensive sports car around a tree and a girl who was with him has been severely injured. The patrolmen who go to the scene dispose of the bottle that they found. The girl's father threatens incrimination but is later "bought off." Tom is in the hospital unconscious for three hours, and Willie and Lucy have an argument. "You must stop him," she demands, "he's wild and selfish and idle." But Willie wants him to have the fun that he had not been able to have when he was young.

Duffy is determined to have Gummy Larson, a close friend and associate of MacMurfee, do the construction on the hospital on the understanding that he will sell out his old boss. But it's more than that with Willie. He wants to make sure that this monument to himself is not...
