Chapter 4 Summary

Jack pursued his Ph.D. in history at the university with his dissertation to be about the maternal uncle of his father. He lived in squalor in an apartment with two other doctoral candidates; all three were working as graduate assistant instructors. We now shift gears and find ourselves in an entirely different story.

The protagonist of this story is Cass Mastern. His brother, Gilbert, a builder of railroads, and very wealthy, died in 1914 at the age of 92. A grandson had inherited the money and the papers of Cass and had contacted Jack to find out if they might be worth some money. Jack replied that since Cass Mastern was not of any historical importance, they were not worth very much, and asked how he should dispose of them. The grandson replied that.....
