Summary

Chapter 53

Tobias muses (in one short paragraph that comprises the chapter) that all those years that he was around her in the Abnegation colony, he never noticed her. He never noticed her until she jumped. He says, "I suppose a fire that burns that bright is not meant to last." (Page 492).

Chapter 54

Tobias finally goes with Christina to see Tris's body. He and Christina are overcome with grief. Tobias falls to the floor by the exam table where Tris's body is, and screams.

Analysis

Chapter 53

This chapter, though extremely short, is loaded with many messages for the reader. Tobias muses that he never really noticed Tris when she was in Abnegation. This is because she was like everyone else there, that she had not truly come into her own, and neither had he. In leaving a life that didn't suit either of them...
