Summary

Chapter 45

Tris joins Matthew and Caleb in the lab. Caleb has just finished verifying that the attack simulation serum is real. Tris is incredulous that on the potentially last day of his existence he is in a lab acting normal. Matthew makes Caleb recite the activation code that will enable the memory serum weapon, and then another button that will deploy it instantly in the compound. Tris asks Matthew if she can be alone with Caleb and he leaves. They reminisce about when they were younger.

Tris muses about what forgiveness truly is and concludes that perhaps it is: "....just the continual pushing aside of bitter memories, until time dulls the hurt and the anger, and the wrong is forgotten."(Page 445)
