Summary

In Chapter 17, Cora arrives at the group home and asks Mary to tell her what happened to her baby brother. Mary is horrified as Cora says that Dawn is “claiming that you might have had something to do with Junior's death too” (360). Cora says Dawn's suggestion could prompt another investigation into Junior's death. (The man named Ray who Mary says tried to molest her was Junior's father.) Mary thinks about Ray. She knows how he died and that his wife would not allow Mary and her mother to attend the funeral. He had another son, older than Mary, who was also named Junior. The next section is from Carmen Vaquero's statement to police. She was Ray's widow and she said that Ray often had relationships with other women, but that he always returned to her.
