Summary

In Chapter 11, Sarah spends all her time writing letters to her sister, complaining about the chores her mother made her do. Mary spends all her time studying and reading the newspaper. Ms. Stein bursts in one day and says Mary has a visitor. Mary is surprised that Alyssa's mother, Melissa Richardson, is in the waiting room. The next section is from Melissa's interview right after Alyssa's death. Melissa said she and her husband went to a party, that they had never left Alyssa with anyone else, and that Dawn had been helpful when she first brought Alyssa home from the hospital. She says Mary adored Alyssa and was always willing to help care for her. When Melissa arrived at the house that night, she asked Mary what happened and Mary claimed she did not know.
