Summary

Chapter 5 opens with part of the notes from a Bellevue psychiatrist who said he saw no signs of Mary having a learning disability or being hyperactive. He questioned whether Mary was actually tested when the medication was diagnosed. They return to the learning center where Ms. Claire says Mary's scores were good but that she could benefit from a prep class. She dismisses Mary's claim that she has no money, saying she can attend for free.

The next section is from Mary's interview with a detective when she was nine. The section ends with Mary asking to go home. When Mary gets back to the group home, Sarah reveals that “they” are trying to teach her a lesson, and that she will be released soon. Mary notes that all the new girls think that.
