Summary

In Chapter 3, Mary confirms with a pregnancy test that she is pregnant. Mary considers her options, including having an abortion, but feels that “would make me a baby killer. Again” (62). As soon as she throws up in front of everyone at the group home, they know she is pregnant. Ted's face shows signs of a fight but he does not want to talk about it. She tells him she is pregnant and he promises it will be alright. When Mary gets back to the group home, Winters and Ms. Carmen are there. Ms. Carmen says they will begin adoption proceedings immediately. When Mary objects, Ms. Carmen says that Mary is a ward of the state, meaning she and Winters will decide what happens to her baby.
