Summary

Chapter 24 shifts focus away from the main narrative, specifically in order to focus on the character of Sharon. Sharon has lived in New Orleans for her entire life, and her family has a history of residing there. She reflects upon her life as she looks at a fence that her father built on their lawn when Sharon was young. When Sharon was a young adult, she moved to the suburbs of Washington, D.C. to attend school and then to work. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, Sharon returned to New Orleans to help the city rebuild, and to take care of her aging parents. Sharon marvels that the fence her father built is still standing, decades after it was built.
