Jeep Cherokee

Deborah Harvey's Jeep Cherokee is found at a rest stop the day after she, along with her boyfriend, Fred Cheney, are reported missing.

Shoes and Socks

The killer forces the couples to remove their shoes and socks before he kills them. The shoes and socks are never recovered.

Jack of Hearts

A jack of hearts card is found either within the vehicles of or with the bodies of the murdered couples. These cards have certain meaning within the military community, giving the CIA and the FBI reason to believe the killer has connections to Camp Peary or the military in general.

Left Proximal Phalange

On Deborah's left proximal phalange, or index finger bone, Scarpetta found a cut that implies that Deborah attempted to attack her killer and was cut in the process. This gives Scarpetta a good idea of the type of knife used in the attack, a serrated blade common with military knives.
