Deceit

The plot in this book centers around of deceit, a motif that is repeated among a variety of characters. Charlotte deceives Tom by having an affair with Bob and by not telling him about her past. She chooses to medicate Jenny after her rape with a treatment that deceives the mind into forgetting traumatic incidents. Tom deceives himself by not being honest with his wife about not wanting Jenny to have the treatment. Jason deceives his parents when he initially chooses not to tell them he intended to buy drugs at the party.
