The Visioning addresses social issues such as gender roles, divorce, and labor unions. Eugene O'Neill's first play, Bound East for Cardiff (1916), was among the first plays produced by Glaspell's theater company, Provincetown Players. It was also O'Neill's first produced play and launched his professional playwriting career.
