Summary

In Chapter 15, “Ministering Angels,” Eliza and her sisters go to the Continental Army Headquarters to inoculate the men against smallpox. Larpent, one of the lieutenants, was afraid of dying from smallpox. Eliza tried to encourage him by telling him how Alex had just been inoculated. Larpent said Alex was much braver than he. Larpent told the girls a story about how Alex had cut his way out of a dangerous battle.

In Chapter 16, “Officers and Gentlemen,” Eliza and her sisters continue inoculating men. The men tried to flirt with the girls, but Eliza was only disappointed that Alex was not there. She was still a bit confused by her feelings. She told herself that she only wanted to see him to find out why he would think her capable of sending the lewd note.
