Hillary is nine years old, and the protagonist of the novel. She is sweet, good-natured, intellectually curious, and young enough to still believe in magic. Hillary's maturation begins when she meets Sara-Kate Connolly and is introduced to the elf village in Sara-Kate's backyard.
