Summary

In Chapter 5, Antonia brings Estela into her home. Estela appears to only be about 16 years old. (Mario is about the same age, or perhaps slightly older.) Antonia offers Estela food and water. Antonia then wonders if Roger allowed Estela to live on the farm for any time at all. Next, Antonia worries about where she will be able to bring Estela when the baby is due. Estela is an undocumented immigrant with no health insurance. Estela explains that it was Mario, not Roger, who forced her off of the farm. Estela and Mario have been separated from each other for two years, and so they both know that the unborn child is not Mario’s. Mario now wants no further contact with Estela.
