Summary

In chapter eight, Norah states that it was publicly thought that Philip was her father. However, Katherine did not "encourage" Norah in this belief. Norah tells us that her mother told her that her father was someone named Don, whom she described as "lovely." Katherine says that he died in a car crash in Big Sur. Norah describes to us how she elaborated on this story herself over the years using stories she had heard, as well as her own imagination. Norah says that in her adolescence she used to repeat the imagination of her father dying multiple times in a day in order to satisfy various emotional needs that she felt in his absence. Norah says, "a part of me loved killing my already-dead father" because it also killed my suspicion that he was not actually dead, but having a great time...
