Chapter 18 Summary

Lirael wakes in the back of a truck when it stops on the Perimeter Road. The Major encounters a soldier riding horseback. The soldier says everyone is dead but him. He says Southerlings that are horrible monsters came to life as his whole platoon fell. Lirael senses hundreds of Dead approaching led by Chlorr.

Lirael uses her bell to send Chlorr back in Death. Mogget warns Chlorr—telling her to run. They get back into the truck because they think Hedge is bringing the hemispheres in by sea near the lighthouse. Lirael decides to take on Chlorr. The soldiers with them stand up against the Dead. The problem is thousands of more Dead are on the way.
