Chapter 5 Summary

Dog tells them the creature is a Ferenk, which is a scavenger made of stone and mud. He also says that a Ferenk should not be on a path that is so well traveled. Lirael continues to question what killed the people and animals because she doesn't recognize the weapon that would cause two holes with scorching around them that each body possesses.

Dog takes a guess at the Free Magic creature that killed the people and animals. He also says the creature was accompanied by a necromancer, which they conclude is Hedge. Lirael confirms after examining the bodies more closely that they have been dead for eight days.

The three go from body to body, performing a rite that turns the bodies to ash and sends their souls into the afterlife. Lirael sees a raven sitting on a mule head and she...
