Chapter 4 Summary

The sun is almost setting when they reach the base of the cliff. They decide to rest and eat for a few hours and then climb the cliff by moonlight. Dog hunts down some rabbits for them to eat. Sam sews the hole Mogget made in the top of his bag. While he sews, he tells his aunt, Lirael, that he is relieved that he is not the Abhorsen-in-Waiting. He says that the coat his ancestors sent for him to wear makes him believe that he is meant to make things instead.

At midnight, Lirael wakes, eats and then they start climbing the steps up the cliff. Each step is the same size so the climb is easy but exhausting. Sam thinks about his parents, who are in Ancelstierre trying to find a way to stop the Ancelstierre refugees from being forced over...
