Summary

The next chapter is titled “Lightning.” Wander, now determined to take care of Warm, does not realize there are men approaching until they are near. Mother had warned men could “kill with a look and a loud noise” (89), and Wander decides to wait. The bachelors are still eating and Wander wants to rush out and beg for a portion of the food for himself and Warm, but he remembers Mother's warning and continues to wait. The men “throw lightning from their sticks” (90) and both wolves are dead. Wander pushes Warn to run. Warm pleads with Wander not to leave him and Wander is determined to save his brother. Wander finds a tree for them to hide under. A light hits them, and the men arrive in their “noisemakers” (vehicles). Warm and Wander split up. Wander hears another bolt of lightning...
