Summary

NOTE: Wander's original name is Swift, but he introduces himself as Wander when he meets Night, the wolf who becomes his mate. For the sake of clarity in this novel, he is referred to as Wander throughout.

The first chapter is titled “Pack.” It opens with Wander, a young pup, in a tunnel with his siblings. His sisters are Pounce and Wag and his brothers are Warm and Sharp. Warm is the only one smaller than Wander. Sharp is the largest and the leader. Wander depends heavily on smell and returns often to the spot his mother is often lying. When she returns to the tunnel, Wander and his siblings rush to get milk. He smells his mother and notes that the smells “make me want to push beyond the place at the mouth of the tunnel” (2).
