Themes and Characters

The central theme of A Wizard of Earthsea is Ged's growth from a poor child on Gont, an island of shepherds, where he is called Duny, into the powerful magician who, in the sequel novels, will unite the magic ring that supports social and political unity in Earthsea, and will defeat the evil magician who attempts to sacrifice creation to become immortal.

Because he is especially gifted and destined to serve the forces of being, Ged is opposed from birth by the forces of nonbeing. In the overall organization of the universe, this opposition between being and nonbeing is natural and good, but in the daily life of humanity, people need to serve the forces of being, to struggle to create and maintain reasonable order in which human happiness and fulfillment are possible.
