Summary

In Chapter 5. Montalbano returns to his office to find Fazio waiting for him. Montalbano wants to talk with Tumminello, the night watchman. They go and meet with Tumminello’s wife and she tells them that her husband got a call to go meet with someone and has not been seen since. After meeting with Tumminello's wife, they decide they should look into Tumminello’s personal life. Montalbano and Fazio discuss the influence of the mafia on politics in Sicily. Later, Montalbano thinks about how he finds it challenging to keep his “disdain” (68) under control since he has gotten older. Fazio research into Tumminello’s personal life reveals him to be an upstanding man. Montalbano is curious as to why Tumminello's wife did not file a missing person’s report. They discuss the possibility that there were two murders, but Montalbano thinks the amount...
