Jack Stokes is a tenant farmer, who works land for the Hoover family. Jack is the child of a strong, unaffectionate woman and a Christian father. Jack's mother died when he was just fourteen, leaving him cynical of his father's faith. When his father dies in a tractor accident, Jack is further convinced that there is no God, at least not the God his father always preached about.
