Fletcher

Fletcher is the main character and first-person narrator of the short story. At the story's start, Fletcher arrives in a town in which he once lived and had political significance. Because of his age, and the darkness, Fletcher is disoriented. Nothing in the village seems familiar. Fletcher then decides to start banging on random cottage doors, hoping that someone who remembers him will open up and welcome him inside.

While knocking on one cottage, a young girl appears behind Fletcher, calling him by name. Fletcher does not know the girl. He is therefore surprised and flattered that she knows who he is, and of his significance in the village in years past. However when the girl mentions the name of Fletcher's contemporaries, lauding them, Fletcher is quick to correct her.
