Summary

In Chapter 6, a black man, Tennyson Bouguereau is beaten for holding Jas Jonski captive. Rosalee weeps when she finds out about her brother, but Lige Magan tries to console her. The men beat him for being “uppity” or believing that he could be anywhere near the status of a white man. Winona takes this opportunity to care for Rosalee and it also dredges up all of her painful memories of her family’s death. Sheriff Flynn rides to Winona’s house and asks Lige who hurt Tennyson and who beat Winona a few days ago. Flynn’s deputy does not understand why he is making such a fuss over a black man and an Indian girl.

Winona must travel alone, and so Thomas cuts her hair and shows her how to disguise herself as a man. Winona is scared to go and feels...
