Book 6: Chapter 42 Summary

Ginny is now working as a waitress at a Perkins Restaurant off Interstate 35. She enjoys the small talk part of working as a waitress. Between shifts, she reads books, preferably by dead novelists. She has no TV, doesn't listen to radio, and the thought of subscribing to a newspaper doesn't occur to her. In late December—over 2 months after she left the farm—Ginny sends gifts to Pammy and Linda and writes her whereabouts to Rose.

She receives a letter from Rose, which says that Larry had a heart attack, died while pushing a shopping cart down the cereal aisle in a Des Moines grocery store about a week after the trial. Rose had not attended the funeral. In February, Ginny receives another short note from Rose, stating that Jess has returned.....
