Book 5: Chapter 39 Summary

Ginny divides her life into before and after this moonlight conversation with Rose. She reflects that her new self can be variously described: most of all, really for the first time, she feels herself, that she can speak with a kind of moral authority and realizes that labeling people precludes knowing them.

She remembers Larry physically beating her, until she fell to her knees, roaring out his identity with each blow, sometimes with his fists and sometimes his belt. Then she sees Caroline, always watching. She also remembers Pete, eyes flaming like Larry's but silent. Ty was always patient and good humored, always moving slowly forward.
