Book 3: Chapter 20 Summary

Larry does not respond to any of Ty and Ginny's questions, neither in the hospital nor on the drive home. In the silence, Ginny reflects on her marriage. She wonders why had she never thought to attend college or live in Mason City. Again, she thinks of her five dead children, her miscarriages. Ginny thinks the problem must surely be her passive attitude and confronts her father about his driving while drinking. She then insists he get back to working on the farm, enjoying the experience of assuming the disciplinary role of a parent. The next morning Ginny serves her groaning father breakfast, withholding all sympathy. After breakfast, Ginny makes Larry walk the quarter-mile to.....
