Summary

Chapter 2 is titled “A Sign.” Brystal attends classes at the Chariot Hills School for Future Wives and Mothers. She learns things such as serving tea to an unexpected guest. Because she knows she has no books at home, she is more irritable with the topics than usual. She has no friends at school and knows it is because her classmates can sense that she is different, which is dangerous. She imagines there will come a day when she is happy and differences will be a cause for celebration. Brystal tries to remain alert in class and soothes herself by touching her reading glasses. Because Barrie is now going to be working rather than going to school to become a Justice, he will no longer be able to bring her books. Brystal is heartbroken about that.
