Summary

Part 2, Chapter 1 begins in the desert on May 4, 1847. John Ferrier, an elderly man, was traveling in the desert. He was parched with thirst. He was carrying a little girl named Lucy. She was about five years old. John was searching for water.

John eventually told the girl that her mother had died in the desert. At first, she sobbed. But when he told the girl that he and she would soon die also the girl became happy again. She was happy to think about getting to see her mother soon in heaven.

Mormons were traveling in the desert in search for safe place to live and to escape persecution. They found John and Lucy. John told them that Lucy was his daughter. The leader of the Mormons was named Brigham Young. He said that the Mormons would give John and Lucy food...
