Summary

Chapter 1 – Eleven-year-old Felicity Juniper Pickle, her little sister Frannie Jo, their Mama, and their dog, Biscuit, arrive in Midnight Gulch, Tennessee. Mama tells Felicity that all the magic has gone out of the place, and that Midnight Gulch used to be a secret town, protected by a mountain, a river, and a forest. The town had to be secret, Mama explains, because all of the residents were magical. She says that they could do everything from catching stars in jars to dancing up sunflowers. Mama reveals she grew up in Midnight Gulch, but that by the time she was born, the magic had been long gone. As Felicity listens to the crickets, she can sense that there is still magic in the place welcoming her.
