Summary

Part 1 opens with a narrator telling readers that their mother used to tell them that everyone has secrets and thus one cannot really know, or trust, others or themselves. The narrator's mother has her own secrets and the narrator wonders whether their mother knew that they would have dark secrets themselves.

Chapter 1, “Stephanie’s Blog, Urgent!” contains one of Stephanie’s blog posts. In it, she tells her readers about her relationship with Emily, her son's relationship with Emily's son, her opinion of Emily's husband, Emily's work and what Emily likes to read, and her fear that something has happened to Emily. She wants to know whether her readers think that it is strange that Emily has disappeared for two days.
