Summary

Chapter 10 opens with the end of WWII and the end of Veronica’s father’s life. When he dies, Veronica become the mistress of Sweetbriar. She feels relieved the war is over, but also lonely. The scrying stone, however, starts speaking to Veronica, glowing in its box in her closet. Shortly after her father’s death, the stone shows her that Valery Chirac, although wounded, is still alive. The stone also shows Veronica that she might have a daughter. While she is looking in the stone, Honeychurch, the butler, knocks on the door. Veronica realizes she forgot to lock the door. He nearly comes inside the room and discovers her, but Oona races to the door and barks at him, nipping his toes and trouser legs. Veronica writes to Queen Elizabeth to get her helping finding Valery. The Queen...
