Summary

In Chapter 3 Isabelle tells Nanette that she had a dream in which Nanette met a beautiful man. The two sisters keep the dream a secret from the others. This dream comes true almost immediately when Michael Kilduff, an Irish farrier, shows up at Orchard Farm. Nanette, the family’s ambassador because she speaks English, greets Michael and tells him they need their ponies’ hooves trimmed. The two quickly strike up a flirtation. When Nanette leaves to go in for supper, Michael asks her to come back after dark to meet him in the byre, where he plans to stay the night. After everyone in the house goes to sleep, Nanette meets Michael for a night “dense with magic” (43). Afterward, Michael tells Nanette that he will remember her, but he does not promise to return or offer to take Nanette...
