Chapter 40 Summary

"The Seconds Between Light and Dark"

There is a chill in the Gulf Stream as they sail toward Cayo Loco. Tully and Solomon navigate and the crew raises the fisherman sail. After Tully finishes his watch, he heads into the doghouse and finds Cleopatra wrapped in a blanket, singing to Dr. Malta in Spanish. She asks Tully to come sit by her. He wishes her a happy birthday and gives her a present; he gives her the Lister's conch. She won't accept it. Instead, she tells him that one day he will find someone that will need it more than her.

Cleopatra then tells Solomon that when she dies the Lucretia is his and that there is a trust fund to operate and care for the ship. She also tells him to build a school.....
