Chapter 3 Summary

"The Patron Saint of Lightning"

Tully sets out on his journey. He makes his way to Alabama where he meets a horse trainer named Clark Gable who then introduces Tully to Captain Kirk. Kirk decides to take Tully and Mr. Twain on his shrimp boat through the Gulf of Mexico and on to the Yucatán Peninsula.

Of the two pieces of art that Tully has with him, one is called The Patron Saint of Lightning, the other is an engraving that belonged to his "almost great-grandmother" (pg. 20). He purchased the painting at a flea market in Cheyenne. It is a woman on a cloud reaching out where beams of light shine down. The light comes from a lighthouse, and where the beams meet, a tiny sailboat is being guided through the storm.
