Chika

Chika is the main character of the short story. Chika is a young woman attending the University of Lagos, where she is studying medicine. Though she likes her field, she is often nervous and uncomfortable in her classes. Unlike her sister, Nnedi, Chika is more reserved, both vocally and politically. She admires the way Nnedi has cast off their Christian beliefs, and has become invested in social causes.

When the university goes on holiday, Chika and Nnedi accept their auntie's invitation to visit her in Kano. Curious to explore the city's older neighborhoods, the travel to the Kano marketplace. Suddenly a riot breaks out. The chaos separates the sister. Confused and disoriented, Chika starts running, unsure what to do.
