Summary

In Chapter 22, Hanako goes outside to wait for Tadashi to return, and Baachan joins her. They talk briefly about the fact that Tadashi was born when Baachan was 42 and she considers him a “miracle.” Hanako realizes that her relationship with her grandparents is different from the relationship with her parents. While her parents love her, her grandparents “adore” her. Tadashi arrives and announces that he has a job with the “occupational army.” Though he believes their actions are illegal, he has cigarettes he can trade for food. Hanako remembers that Tadashi had pledged to keep her safe, but she suddenly realizes that he may not be able to in some situations.

In Chapter 23, Baachan shows Hanako the three photographs she has, showing Tadashi with his parents. Baachan then gives Hanako the skirt she made from the plaid material. Hanako is thrilled with it...
