Chapter three takes place at Little Paddocks. While preparing for guests, Julia, Miss Bunner, and Miss Blacklock lightly discuss the differences in the times of young Julia and the older Miss Blacklock and Miss Bunner. While Julia thinks women stayed home and wrote notes, she learns that Miss Bunner and Miss Blacklock did not have that luxury. Miss Bunner and Miss Blacklock went into the work force.
