Summary

In Chapter 43, Johnny returns to Philadelphia, excited to finally have a firm understanding with Marcia. John goes back to Quincy and Johnny soon follows. His family is glad to have him home and he does not have the heart to tell them he plans to remain “in the south” with Marcia (303). Eliza reveals that John told them about Johnny's engagement, and she says Kate is soon to marry as well. Eliza expresses concern over Johnny's marriage, saying he is young and making it clear she worries about his connection with anyone. Johnny learns that Kate is continuing her plan for a magazine and the first edition is being printed.
