Fifty-nine year old Ove (his last name is never given) is the novel’s central character and protagonist. He is portrayed as hard-working, quiet, strong-willed, outspoken, and opinionated: other adjectives that would apply include curmudgeonly, crusty, cranky, cantankerous, and rigid.
