Summary

Chapter 10: Meeting My Mother – Saroo landed in India on February 11, 2012, in the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh, India. The return to India was difficult, as by then Saroo had become thoroughly Western. Things were even dirtier than Saroo remembered, and the poverty was still clear. Saroo took a bus toward Khandwa, but bad roads and traffic made the trip difficult and slow. Saroo took a room at the Hotel Grand Barracks, formerly a British army installation, then headed out into the city of Khandwa, wondering which way to go. He was plagued by fear and doubt as he began seeking to retrace the steps of his childhood. Much had changed, but some features –such as Baba’s little green mosque –remained. Saroo eventually arrived at his childhood home to find it abandoned except for a goat. That was when the young woman emerged...
