Chapters 6-10 Summary

In chapter 6, Abbie learns from Grandpa Deal that Will has been asking about her. At the same time, however, Abbie gets advice from the new preacher's wife who tells her she should explore her singing ability because it could one day win her fame. With this advice in mind, Abbie writes to Ed Matthews and accepts his offer of marriage. However, Abbie quickly regrets her decision. When Will Deal comes home from war, Abbie confesses her love to him and he confesses the same to her. In chapter 7, Abbie and Will are married. Before the ceremony, Abbie's mother gives her a pearl necklace from her skin-covered box that Basil gave to her when they were newly married. Abbie chooses not to wear the necklace in her wedding, but promises that someday her own daughter will wear the pearls with a fine...
