Summary

In high school at Commerce, Brittany began dating a charming boy named Red who was a drug dealer. At the time, Brittany did not think much of Red’s dealing because drug culture had become an ingrained part of her community, especially because there were few legitimate economic opportunities for young people. Brittany graduated from high school a year early at the top of her class and began working at a bank while pursuing a degree in accounting at the University of Texas at Arlington. When she was a child, Brittany had wanted to be a lawyer because she saw a role model in Clare Huxtable, a Black attorney on “The Cosby Show.” However, eventually Brittany began to think that working in law was not possible for her because of the lack of role models she saw around her...
