Summary

On March 10, 1941, a middle-aged man named Mathieu waits outside of a Paris subway station, where he receives a covert message from a teenage girl, Lisette: "'They have crossed the border. They're in Spain.'" Two days later, Mathieu is in the town of Senlis, just north of Paris, meeting with the English fighter pilot Arthur Gillen, whose plane had been shot down over France. They board a train to Paris, only to see the train suddenly diverted to an identification checkpoint. With the help of a railway engineer, Mathieu and Gillen sneak onto another train that takes them to a below-ground freightyard underneath Paris. As Mathieu and Gillen attempt to climb up to the street level they are shot at by German security guards, but they safely make it to the street.
