Summary

In Chapter 51, Shayla is relieved that Hana is safely in her room the next morning. Shayla looks at Hana’s poster of Tommie Smith and John Carlos, Olympians who had their medals taken from them because they raised their fists on the podium in a symbol of Black power. Shayla thinks it must have been hard for them to demonstrate that fairness was more important than winning their races. Shayla wonders if she could ever be that brave.

Hana tells Shayla that she was scared during the rally, but she was also angry. After the police officer was not found guilty, it seemed like a statement that Blacks did not matter at all.
