Summary

In Chapter 30, at the preseason track meet, Shayla falls face-first over a hurdle. Coach West helps Shayla up and tells her that it happens all the time. Shayla feels broken by embarrassment, but Coach West encourages Shayla to finish the race instead of going to sit down.

In Chapter 31, when Bernard comes to ask Shayla if she is okay, Angie suggests that Bernard has a crush on Shayla, a comment that shocks Shayla. Shayla loosens up and laughs with Julia and Isabella about her fall when they approach her after the race. Stacy joins them and comments about Shayla’s fall.
